This one is all about what you'll include. And that's good news, because if you want to emerge on the other side of this plan with a new body, you must have the flexibility and freedom to keep yourself from getting hungry, and the knowledge that you can eat well no matter what.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So let's get right to it, because eating more of the right foods more often is the basis of the Abs Diet. Remember:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MORE FOOD = MORE MUSCLE = LESS FLAB&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's why the Abs Diet isn't a diet you'll feel you "have to" stick to. It's one you'll want to stick to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See, I've talked to lots of men who've tried diets, and many of them describe trying to stick to a strict diet plan as sort of like standing waist-deep in the ocean and being pummeled by one wave after another. Those waves come in the form of doughnuts the boss brought in, the office vending machine you're stuck with when the boss makes you work late, and the happy hour to celebrate the firing of the boss who gave you all those doughnuts and late vending machine nights.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you're staring at a wave that's clearly bigger than you, you have three choices. You could run back to shore or try to jump over it, but those options will leave you with a suit full of sand. But if you dive through the wave head-on, you'll emerge unscathed. Same with a diet. You can try to run away by avoiding restaurants, parties, weddings, or anyplace that's likely to tempt you with nachos grande. You can also try to take the high road, but ordering a salad and water after a softball game hardly feels right. If you want a diet to work -- if you want to emerge on the other side of this plan with a new body -- your only choice is to have the flexibility and freedom to keep yourself from getting hungry and the knowledge that you can eat well no matter what.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You're about to dive into the Abs Diet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GUIDELINE 1 - Eat Six Meals a Day&lt;br /&gt;We're so used to hearing people talk about eating less food that it's become weight-loss doctrine. But as you remember from the physiology of metabolism, you have to eat more often to change your body composition. The new philosophy I want you to keep in mind is "energy balance."&lt;br /&gt;Researchers at Georgia State University developed a technique to measure hourly energy balance -- that is, how many calories you're burning versus how many calories you're taking in. The researchers found that if you keep your hourly surplus or deficit within 300 to 500 calories at all times, you will best be able to change your body composition by losing fat and adding lean muscle mass. Those subjects with the largest energy imbalances (those who were over 500 calories in either ingestion or expenditure) were the fattest, while those with the most balanced energy levels were the leanest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if you eat only your three squares a day, you're creating terrific imbalances in your energy levels. Between meals, you're burning many more calories than you're taking in. At mealtimes, you're taking in many more than you're burning. Research shows that this kind of eating plan is great -- if your dream is to be the next John Candy. But if you want to look slimmer, feel fitter, and -- not coincidentally -- live longer, then you need to eat more often. In the same study, subjects who added three snacks a day to three regular meals balanced out their energy better, lost fat, and increased lean body mass (as well as increased their power and endurance).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a similar study, researchers in Japan found that boxers who ate the same amount of calories a day from either two or six meals both lost an average of 11 pounds in 2 weeks. But the guys who ate six meals a day lost 3 pounds more fat and 3 pounds less muscle than the ones who ate only two meals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's science to support the fact that more meals work, but the plain-speak reason it works is because it does something that many diets don't do: It keeps you full and satiated, which will reduce the likelihood of a diet-destroying binge.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How it works: For scheduling purposes, alternate your larger meals with smaller snacks. Eat two of your snacks roughly 2 hours before lunch and dinner, and one snack roughly 2 hours after dinner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sample time schedule:&lt;br /&gt;8 a.m.: breakfast&lt;br /&gt;11 a.m.: snack&lt;br /&gt;1 p.m.: lunch&lt;br /&gt;4 p.m.: snack&lt;br /&gt;6 p.m.: dinner&lt;br /&gt;8 p.m.:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's not something you need to stick to religiously, just a suggestion for how you can make the Abs Diet work for you. It also showshow to incorporate the recipes into your everyday life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GUIDELINE 2 - Make These 12 Abs Diet Powerfoods the Staples of Your Diet&lt;br /&gt;The Abs Diet will teach you to focus on (not restrict yourself to) a handful of food types -- the Abs Diet Power 12&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-- to fulfill your core nutritional needs. These foods are all good for you. They're so good, in fact, that they'll just about single-handedly exchange your fat for muscle (provided you've kept your receipt). Just as important, I've designed the Power 12 to include literally thousands of food combinations. There are hundreds of dairy products, fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and other choices to satisfy your tastes. Incorporating these Powerfoods into your six meals a day will satiate your tastes and cravings and keep you from feasting on the dangerous fat promoters in your diet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For now, I just want you to remember:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Almonds and other nuts&lt;br /&gt;Beans and legumes&lt;br /&gt;Spinach and other green vegetables&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dairy (fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese)&lt;br /&gt;Instant oatmeal (unsweetened, unflavored)&lt;br /&gt;Eggs&lt;br /&gt;Turkey and other lean meats&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Peanut butter&lt;br /&gt;Olive oil&lt;br /&gt;Whole-grain breads and cereals&lt;br /&gt;Extra-protein (whey) powder&lt;br /&gt;Raspberries and other berries&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;12!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GUIDELINE 3 - Drink Smoothies Regularly&lt;br /&gt;With schedules the way they are today, it's no wonder that your definition of a kitchen gadget is the one with a team logo that can open bottles. You need to make one exception for the kitchen gadget that won't fit on a key chain: the blender. I don't care how many speeds it has or how it looks, and I couldn't tell you the difference between a mince and a frappe. All I care about is how much stuff I can put in it and how good the stuff tastes when it comes out. (One thing I do recommend: Get a blender with at least 400 watts, which will give it the power to handle chopping ice and shredding fruit and to outlast any Jimmy Buffett fans who might drop by unexpectedly.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you consider that changing your body takes time, motivation, and knowledge, consider your blender to be one of your most powerful tools in this plan. Smoothies made with a mixture of the Abs Diet Powerfoods can act as meal substitutions and as potent snacks, and they work for a few reasons.&lt;br /&gt;They require little time.&lt;br /&gt;Adding berries, flavored whey powder, or peanut butter will make them taste like dessert, which will satisfy your sweet cravings.&lt;br /&gt;Their thickness takes up a lot of space in your stomach.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don't cook much. When I want a quick, healthy meal, I dump milk, low-fat vanilla yogurt, ice, uncooked instant oatmeal, peanut butter, and a couple of teaspoons of chocolate whey powder into my blender and press a button. You can mix and match ingredients, depending on your tastes (see these recipes), but use the milk, yogurt, whey powder, and ice as the base. Here's the evidence showing these blended power drinks will help you control your weight.&lt;br /&gt;Researchers at Purdue University found that people stayed fuller longer when they drank thick drinks than when they drank thin ones -- even when calories, temperatures, and amounts were equal.&lt;br /&gt;A Penn State study found that men who drank yogurt shakes that had been blended until they doubled in volume ate 96 fewer calories a day than men who drank shakes of normal thickness.&lt;br /&gt;In a study presented at the North American Association of the Study of Obesity, researchers found that regularly drinking meal replacements increased a man's chance of losing weight and keeping it off for longer than a year.&lt;br /&gt;A University of Tennessee study found that men who added three servings of yogurt a day to their diets lost 61 percent more body fat and 81 percent more stomach fat over 12 weeks than men who didn't eat yogurt. Wow! Researchers speculated that the calcium helps the body burn fat and limit the amount of new fat your body can make.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How it works: Drink an 8-ounce smoothie for breakfast, as a meal substitute, or as a snack before or after your workout.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GUIDELINE 4 - Stop Counting&lt;br /&gt;Though calorie burning is paramount to losing fat, calorie counting will make you lose focus and motivation. By eating these 12 Abs Diet Powerfoods and their many relatives, the foods themselves will, in a way, count your calories for you. They'll keep you healthy and feeling full and satisfied. Plus, the most energy-efficient foods are almost like doormen at a nightclub:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They're not going to let any of the riffraff in without your approval.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, that doesn't give you license to speed down the road of monstrous portions. Most of us claim that we watch what we eat, but most of us don't have a clue. A U.S. Department of Agriculture study asked men what they ate, then checked it against reality. The truth: Men ages 25 to 50 were eating twice the grains, fats, and sweets that they estimated. If you eat six well-balanced meals, your body will regulate portions through things like fiber, protein, and the sheer volume of the smoothies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That said, it's always wise -- especially in the beginning of the plan, when you're most vulnerable and adjusting to a new way of eating -- to focus on portion control by limiting the servings of some foods, especially the ones with fat (like peanut butter) and carbohydrates (like rice or bread).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A good rule: Stick to one to two servings per food group, and keep the total contents of each meal contained to the diameter of your plate. A height restriction is in effect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GUIDELINE 5 - Know What to Drink -- And What Not To&lt;br /&gt;I drink beer. I drink wine. I like to drink beer and wine, and gin and tonics on a hot summer day, and a lot of other things. There are health benefits to having one or two drinks a day, but there are many ways that alcohol can get you into trouble. Most important, alcohol -- like soda -- adds calories that you don't need right now. These calories are empty calories because they don't actually help make you full or decrease the amount of food you'll eat. In fact, alcohol makes you eat more and encourages your body to burn less fat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When Swiss researchers gave eight healthy men enough alcohol to exceed their daily calorie requirements by 25 percent (five beers for someone who eats 3,000 calories a day), they found that booze actually impaired men's ability to burn fat by as much as 36 percent. Booze also makes you store fat. Your body sees alcohol as a poison and tries to get rid of it. So your liver stops processing all other calories until it has dealt with the alcohol. Anything else you eat while you're drinking most likely will end up as fat. In some more indirect ways, alcohol can inhibit your body's production of testosterone and human growth hormone -- two hormones that help burn fat and build muscle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hate to tell you to drink water, but drinking about eight glasses a day has a lot of benefits. It helps keep you satiated (a lot of times what we interpret as hunger is really thirst). Water flushes the waste products your body makes when it breaks down fat for energy or when it processes protein. You also need water to transport nutrients to your muscles, to help digest food, and to keep your metabolism clicking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you're serious about shedding belly flab, I'd encourage you to stay off the booze for the 6-week plan. At the least, limit yourself to two or three alcoholic drinks per week. The best drinks you can have are fat-free, 1%, or 2% milk; water; and green tea (or, if you must, two glasses of diet soda a day).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;GUIDELINE 6 - For One Meal a Week, Forget the Guidelines&lt;br /&gt;I would never advocate cheating on your spouse, your employer, or your taxes. But I want you to cheat on this diet. I want you to take one meal during the week and forget everything about good carbohydrates and good fats. Have half a pizza, buffalo wings, or whatever it is that you miss the most while you're on this plan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Have it, savor it, and then dig back in for another week. I want you to cheat for a couple reasons. One, I want you to control when you cheat. Plan your cheat meal for the week -- whether it's Saturday night out, during a football game, or whenever. But if you keep it planned, you'll stick to it. The way to control your cravings is to satisfy them every once in a while. If you can make it through 6 days, you reward yourself and know that 6 days of good eating is a regimen you can stick to over the long term.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And there's another important reason. I want you to cheat: because it'll actually help you change your body. A successful diet plan is about how you eat most of the time, not how you eat all of the time. In fact, a high-calorie day of eating can rev up your metabolism. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that men who ate twice as many calories in a day as they normally did increased their metabolism by 9 percent in the 24-hour period that followed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But here's where you have to show control. I think that this diet plan allows you to have plenty of foods that are both good and good for you, but I know you will crave other foods that don't fit into our guidelines. Think of this cheat meal as the carrot at the end of a good week of eating. Tally up the number of hours you spend in front of the tube each week and you'll probably find more than enough minutes for the gym. Saying you have no time "assumes that everything else in your life is more important than staying in shape," says Jeffrey Davidson, author of The 60-Second Procrastinator . Here are six fitness goals for 2007, and the tips you need to get there fast.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;BUILD BIG ARMS&lt;br /&gt;Don't devote an entire workout to your arms -- just add these to the end of your routine. It automatically restricts you to the correct number of sets and reps. After you've finished your compound exercises, do one of these two dumbbell-biceps-curl workouts, alternating between the two every session.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Perform four to six reps, resting 90 seconds between sets.&lt;br /&gt;2. Do 10 to 12 reps, resting 60 seconds between sets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's how to determine the number of sets you'll do: Choose the heaviest weight that allows you to complete all the reps (six or 12), while taking 3 seconds to lower the weight. Now do as many sets as you can, stopping when you can't complete the lowest number of reps in the given range for that day (four or 10) without maintaining perfect control over the weight. This includes leaning back -- or cheating -- as you lift, and the weight slowing as you curl it from the bottom to the top position.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;MAKE YOUR ABS POP&lt;br /&gt;Lost your gut but still no sign of a washboard? Bring your six-pack to the surface by using an ab workout with moderate weight and high volume (sets and repetitions). Three or four times a week, attack this routine from ab master Juan Carlos Santana, C.S.C.S. Perform the workout circuit-style -- doing one movement after another without rest. Once you've completed one full circuit, rest for 60 seconds before repeating. Build up to four sets of 20 repetitions of each exercise. Start with a light medicine ball and work up to a 10-pounder.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Medicine-Ball Crunch&lt;br /&gt;Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat, holding a medicine ball in front of your forehead. Crunch up, bringing your shoulder blades off the floor. Then lower yourself to the starting position.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Medicine-Ball Leg Raise&lt;br /&gt;Lie flat on your back holding a medicine ball between your feet. Start with the ball suspended about 8 inches off the floor, and raise and lower it with short movements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;Explosive Ball Exchange&lt;br /&gt;Grab a medicine ball and lie flat on the floor with your legs straight and your arms straight beyond your head. Keeping your arms and legs straight, lift your legs and crunch up until you can place the ball between your feet. Once you've made the exchange, lower yourself until your feet are about 8 inches off the floor and your arms are straight beyond your head. Reverse the move, placing the ball back into your hands, and lower yourself to the starting position. That's one rep.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;NEVER MISS A WORKOUT&lt;br /&gt;We're going to make this one easy for you. If you're having trouble fitting in three or four workouts every week, just cut your gym days down to 2. Sound too good to be true? Don't get us wrong -- a 4-day routine will lead to bigger gains faster. But a 2-day plan will still let you build muscle, and has the added benefit of increasing your recovery time between sessions. "Plus, if you're hitting the gym only twice a week, it should give you an extra layer of motivation to make those days truly count," says Mike Mejia, C.S.C.S., author of The Better Body Blueprint. So if you're pressed for time, plan for one trip to the gym on the weekend, and squeeze in a second near the middle of the week. Mejia recommends doing this full-body routine on both days to ensure you make the most of your time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;The core lifts&lt;br /&gt;Do three or four sets of 10 to 12 repetitions of each exercise.&lt;br /&gt;Barbell squat&lt;br /&gt;Incline bench press&lt;br /&gt;Romanian deadlift&lt;br /&gt;Seated cable row&lt;br /&gt;Parallel-bar dip&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The finishers&lt;br /&gt;Do one or two sets of 10 to 12 repetitions of each exercise.&lt;br /&gt;Hanging leg raise&lt;br /&gt;Biceps curl&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;INJURY-PROOF YOUR BODY&lt;br /&gt;Overhaul your posture and you'll not only look taller and leaner, but also immunize yourself against injury. "Regardless of where injuries occur, there's typically a postural dysfunction in the hips, ankles, or upper back that caused the problem," says Mike Robertson, C.S.C.S., a strength coach in Indianapolis. If you find it impossible to stay ruler straight for more than a few minutes at a time, determine which of the following problems are plaguing your posture.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Do your toes point ahead, or do they turn out to at least 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock?Look at yourself straight on in a mirror. If they turn out, your calves are tight, which means you're at greater risk of future knee trouble. The fix: Stand against a wall with your heels about 6 to 12 inches out in front of it. Then pull your toes up toward your face. Do two sets of 20 repetitions every other day.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;2. Does your belt tilt downward in the front?Turn to the side and look in the mirror again. If your belt tips, you have "anterior pelvic tilt," a geeky way of saying your front thigh muscles (a.k.a. hip flexors) are tight. This tends to happen when you spend most of your day sitting. The fix: Before every lower-body workout, stretch your hip flexors for 30 seconds on each side, followed by 10 reps of glute bridges. Repeat one to three times.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;3. How's your upper-back posture from the side?Are your shoulders in line with your ears?&lt;br /&gt;Most men who work desk jobs suffer from kyphosis, a slouched upper back. The fix: Sit tall in a chair with a back that goes only halfway up your spine. Clasp your hands behind your head and bring your elbows together in front of you. Then lean back over the chair and push your elbows up, holding for a beat. Do 20 reps twice a day.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;COMPLETE A TRIATHLON&lt;br /&gt;Your first move, before selecting your Speedo, is to go to trifind.com to locate a target event for motivation. Look for a "sprint" triathlon, in which typical distances are a half-mile swim, 15-mile bike, and 5-K run. Next, find a partner or group with the same goal; you'll spur each other on. Give yourself 3 months to train if you're new to any of the sports; 6 weeks is plenty if you're already fit and know how to swim, bike, and run.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;If you're worried about the swim (most first-timers are), buy an instructional DVD from totalimmersion.net -- you'll be surprised how fast you can learn. One key: Swim with your body and arms, not your legs. "Your arms should give you 90 percent of your propulsion in the water," says Jay Marschall, a USA Triathlon–certified coach in Montana. The trick is to use fewer strokes and glide longer to cover the same distance. With each stroke, rotate your whole body so that your hips crest the water's surface -- your narrow profile will produce less drag. Your legs should still gently flutter-kick, but their primary purpose is to keep your butt level with your head. "Otherwise you'll be plowing the water like a barge," Marschall says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;SPEED UP YOUR METABOLISM&lt;br /&gt;You don't need to eat like a child to recapture the metabolism of your youth. "You can rev up your metabolic engine without changing how much you eat," says Mark Hyman, M.D., author of Ultrametabolism. But if you're a beginner or you haven't exercised in a long time, take the first 2 weeks to adjust to your new eating plan before starting the workout. If you're champing at the bit to begin maximizing your weight loss, start getting in the exercise habit by walking briskly for up to 30 minutes a day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Focus on Muscles&lt;br /&gt;I used to work with a guy who was about 30 pounds overweight. Sure, he was able to run farther than he ever had, but his body stayed the same. Why? When that becomes too easy, increase the repetitions of pushups, and hold on to some form of weight -- light dumbbells are best -- while doing squats. This light workout, especially in combination with 30 minutes of brisk walking, will really fire up your fat burners.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If You're Already in the Exercise Habit&lt;br /&gt;Maybe you lift weights once or twice a week. Maybe you jog a few miles every morning. Maybe you're favored to win the gold in the decathlon this summer. No matter what your workout is now, you're probably going to build more muscle, and burn more fat, if you switch to the Abs Diet Workout.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even if your current exercise program has been working well for you, experts agree that mixing up your workout every month or so is the best way to maximize your results. In some ways, HIV is a fragile virus and generally does not survive well outside the human body. This fragility explains why, unlike many widespread hardy viruses such as those that cause the common cold, HIV does not rapidly infect a large number of persons. One London clinic reported that between 1965-75 it treated only between five and 11 patients with the allergy eached year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Now the figure tops the 40 mark, and that is likely to be a big underestimate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Only a small fraction of people with the allergy seek medical help, and an even smaller number are tested to identify the source. Screening of individuals in Bangkok, using a test kit to see if their skin was allergic to a patch with PPD, suggests that more than a million Thais may be sensitive to PPD, the BMJ said. In Germany, the figure could be 1.3 million.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;The BMJ says there's no point in covering up the roots of the problem: the fashion for hair dyeing, especially among young people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;In Japan, for example, 13 percent of of female high school students, six percent of women in their 20s and two percent of men in their 20s used hair dye in 1992.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;In 2001, the proportions were 41 percent, 85 percent and 33 percent respectively. As a result, they determined that the positive impact fruits and vegetables offer come not from just the fiber but also from antioxidants which are present in both juice and the whole fruit and vegetables. “When considering cancer and coronary heart disease prevention, there is no evidence that pure fruit and vegetable juices are less beneficial than whole fruit and vegetables,” the researchers said. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;The researchers added that the positioning of juices as being nutritionally inferior to whole fruits and vegetables in relationship to chronic disease development is “unjustified” and that policies, which suggest otherwise about fruit and vegetable juices, should be re-examined. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;The researchers who authored the paper suggest that more studies in certain area are needed to bolster their findings. “Although this independent review of the literature is not designed to focus on any particular 100 percent juice, it does go a long way in demonstrating that fruit and vegetable juices do play an important role in reducing the risk of various diseases, especially cancer and cardiovascular heart disease,” said Sue Taylor, RD, with the Juice Products Association, a non-profit organization not associated with this research. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;She added that appropriate amounts of juices should be included in the diet of both children and adults, following guidelines established by leading health authorities. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Taylor also points to a large epidemiological study, published in the September 2006 issue of the Journal of Medicine, which found that consumption of a variety of 100 percent fruit and vegetable juices was associated with a reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;In fact, that study found that individuals who drank three or more servings of fruit and vegetable juices per week had a 76 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who drank juice less than once per week. Pigmentation, wrinkles, sagging skin and more, your skin suffers a lot as you grow older. ‘Protect – Correct – Enhance’ is Dr. Kohli’s mantra for complete skin care. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;She suggests certain age-appropriate skin care routines. In the 20s, protect your skin from damages caused by the sun’s rays and pollution. In the 30s and 40s, correct any damage that may have been caused due to earlier neglect . And in your 50s, enhance your skin. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;15-25 YEARS: Skin care should begin in the teen years. Wash your face at least thrice a day to keep it clean and use a light oil-free moisturiser at night. Determine your skin type and use appropriate products . Those with oily skin, should use a face scrub two or three times a week, and a mud or clay pack once a week. And those with dry skin should use a scrub only once or twice a week and a hydrating pack once a week. Avoid alkaline-based products, as they are harsh on the skin. Regular clean-ups from a dermatologist, or a home-care routine should be followed. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;First, cleanse your face, take a light steam, and follow it with cold water. Then, use the scrub, splash cold water and finally, apply the face pack. If you like to sunbathe, use a sun tan lotion with a low SPF of 8-10 for the body and 10-12 for the face, so that you do not suffer the repercussions of pigmentation later. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;25-40 YEARS: During these years, the skin undergoes several changes due to pregnancy , hormones, etc. Use a sunscreen with SPF 15-20 and an even higher SPF for those who indulge in outdoor activities. You can also use anti-ageing products such as lightening creams, besides scrubs and packs. It’s advisable to use only hydrating packs and milder products, as you grow older. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;The skin loses its glow and gets duller due to weakening of cells and dehydration. To increase your glow, use products rich in Vitamin C, and anti-wrinkle and anti-ageing products such as Retinol, AHA, etc. Avoid alcohol-based products as they dull the skin. The 30s also bring pigmentation, freckles and the appearance of red spots.These must be addressed immediately by seeing a dermatologist. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;45+ YEARS: As you grow older, you need heavier moisturiser than before and higher strength anti-ageing products. Additionally, you require lifting creams that contain substances to firm, lift and tone the skin. Several new products are available today containing plant extracts and green tea extracts . Some women suffer from acne and there might be an increase in facial hair, due to changing hormones. However, these require a different treatment and a dermatologist should be consulted. Another common occurrence is pigmentation. Sunscreens , anti pigmentation and lightening creams can help prevent them.&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;THE IDEAL DIET General guidelines for women of all age groups: Be consistent and disciplined, and follow your diet on a lifelong basis. Have as many fresh fruits and raw salads as possible. Proteins in the form of tofu, low fat paneer, yoghurts, lentils, and pulses are very good for the skin. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Non-vegetarians should include egg whites, chicken and fish. About 690,000 procedures are to be carried out this year, a 40 per cent increase on last year, and 240 per cent higher than 2001.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt; Analysts have predicted that the number of women willing to go under the knife will grow by 139 per cent within the next four years, and that the cosmetic surgery market could be worth 1.8 billion pounds per year by 2011. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;During the survey, amongst of the 1,000 adults were asked if they would consider having cosmetic surgery done on them. "Obese people can eat up to 45% more," reports lead researcher Brian Wansink (Ph.D.), in the book, ‘Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think’. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Wansink revealed the reason behind this is just because some foods say low-fat, they don’t necessarily mean low-calories. "People don’t realize that low-fat foods are not always low-calorie foods," Wansink said. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Fat is often replaced with sugar. Low-fat snacks are an average of 11 percent lower in calories, but people wrongly believe they are around 40 percent lower.&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;In the first study, two groups of people attending a holiday open-house were given identical regular chocolates that were labelled as either "Regular" or as "Low-fat." &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;The researchers found that people served themselves an average of a third more of the candies, which would have translated into 28 percent more calories if they had actually been low-fat. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Co-author Pierre Chandon, marketing professor at INSEAD in France, said that a second study showed this is because people tend to feel “less guilty” when they eat low-fat foods, and so they actually end up eating more. However, 21 percent of the women in the study were still bleeding after a year on the pill, the study published in the December issue of the journal 'Contraception ' said. The researchers say that the effectiveness of the continuous oral contraceptive was similar to that of a traditional 21-day regimen. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;They add that the continuous pill also demonstrated a good safety profile. After a year on the pill, roughly 60 percent of the women in the study experienced no periods and 20 percent had some spotting, it said. Women taking oral contraceptives have what is called withdrawal bleeding during the seven days they are off active hormones. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;Women on Lybrel however get continuous hormones — without days off the active pills — so they should have little or no uterine bleeding, it said. Eliminating periods with continuous oral contraceptives has been shown to be an effective treatment for many reproductive-related health problems, including endometriosis, as well as possibly reducing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt; Birth control pills designed to limit uterine bleeding to just four times a year are already on the market in the US. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;But Lybrel is the first oral contraceptive designed to do away with periods, it said. Why is depression the most common rising urban phenomenon to strike women! &lt;p align="justify"&gt;This might come as a bit of a shocker, but depression is not far from being as common as a cold. When the feeling of loneliness overwhelms you, know that you are not alone! Depression as a mood disorder is synonymous with persistent sadness or lack of interest in pleasurable activities along with sleep and dietary changes. Truth is, it's no longer rare. Depression can strike anyone and under any circumstance. But does it mean you're on your way to loonyville, that you're brain-damaged or infertile? Was your mother really happier? And will you be mocked if you openly get treated for it? No! No! No! Here are the facts separated from the fiction... Myth: Depression=Madness Fact: Depression is a mood disorder where there's constant contact with reality. Madness, on the other hand, involves disorder of thought and severance with the real world. Reiterates Dr Kanika Mitra, consultant psychiatrist, "Ninety per cent of the population suffers from depression, but it goes unnoticed as the ailment can be self-limiting." Myth: Depression=Lifelong illness Fact: Dr Mitra states that "depression is not a lifelong disease and is curable in six months." However, in certain cases, where depression has an endogenous origin, medication can continue up to two years. "When caused by chemical imbalance of the brain, a stabiliser can prevent recurrence," she clarifies. When environment is the stimuli of depression, counselling is the best option. Psychotherapist Dr Anjali Chhabria further explains, "Women are more prone to depression during adolescence, childbirth and menopause mainly due to hormonal reasons. But they can be all cured." Myth: Depression=Infertility in women Fact: Depression does not hamper a woman's reproductive cycle. Dr Mitra adds, "A patient cannot conceive while she is on anti-depressants. And there might be a libido reduction due to the drug, but once it is stopped, she is normal." Myth: Depression=Hormonal imbalances in women Fact: Dr Mitra claims, "There are no other organic changes in the body, except loss of libido, appetite and weight gain/loss while one is on medication." Anti-depressants do not cause any hormonal imbalance. However, Dr Chhabria says that if depression remains untreated for a long period, it might lead to other disorders like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac or even thyroid problems. Myth: Anti-depressants=Damaging your brain Fact: Anti-depressants only correct the chemical imbalance of the brain. Other than weight gain/loss, libido loss, possibility of gaining eye power and occasional constipation, the drugs have no additional side effects. "Earlier, when psychiatric medications were limited, people took drugs without proper supervision which caused various side-effects. Some of the newer medicines have no side-effects at all," clarifies Dr Chhabria. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;WERE OUR MOTHERS ANY HAPPIER? With the number of women committing suicide increasing every year, one wonders whether we're a generation of overtly depressed women. Were our mothers and grandmothers happier? "I doubt it," says Farida Lambray, a school vice-principal. "Just because the number of cases have increased now, it does not mean that our mothers were happier. In those days, everything used to happen behind closed doors. Today, it's out in the open." Dr Mitra reminisces, "Since women from our mothers' or grandmothers' generation did not know what depression actually meant, they never sought help. Depression was considered a taboo then, which has considerably changed now." Depression is a passing phenomenon that affects all. Many women get depressed when faced with problems they can't solve. It depends on how well one copes with stress - the extent of depression depends on that. We all go through a temporary breakdown but bounce back eventually with help. Remember, seeking help doesn't make one weak. Instead, it shows that you are willing to deal with the problem. Also, the urban mental disorder level has increased which is directly proportional to the pace of life and rising expectations. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;WHEN CAN IT TURN FATAL? Left to fester, depression can only get worse and even become fatalistic. In severe cases, suicidal thoughts are common. People who say it in words should be treated immediately. Women aged between 15 and 29 years are most prone to giving up their lives, according to crime branch statistics. In 2004, 235 (out of 464 women) in this age group committed suicide. Bankruptcy or sudden change in economic status, infertility, dowry disputes, failure in exams and death of a near person are other triggers to suicidal attempts. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;SYMPTOMS Persistent sadness, constant irritability, day-long agitation, morning blues, negative thoughts, feelings of guilt, unexplained sustaining pains, constant feelings of emptiness. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;KINDS OF DEPRESSION Postpartum depression: This kind of depression arises post-pregnancy due to endocrine problems. A mother might undergo dilemma about her ability to rear the child. In extreme cases, she might experience urges to kill her baby - a stage when she feels that life is not worth living. Mothers feel lost, lethargic and sleepy all the time. Menopausal depression: Here, women suffer from hot flushes, burning feet and fatigue. A sense of losing womanhood gives rise to depression. Hypochondriasis: This is masked depression. Victims complain of bodily symptoms and there is exaggerated and excessive worry about one's health. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: OCD can be associated with depression where the patient is compulsive about cleanliness and ruminates over subjects that cannot be controlled in spite of countless efforts. Generalised anxiety disorder: Palpitation, dryness of mouth, butterflies in the stomach, repeated toilet visits are some of the symptoms. Manic Depressive: It's a psychosis where a person suffers from attacks of excessive energy and ecstasy followed by feeling really low. This is usually a genetic disorder. BEATING &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;DEPRESSION: Communicate: If you feel you're going 'cuckoo' over an issue, talk to a friend, spouse or someone you trust. Bottling up only worsens the situation. Stop moping: Tell yourself that no problem is so big that it can't be fixed. Socialise: To withdraw is the worst thing. Join a support group or enroll for a dance class. Find time for yourself: Not dealing with a situation will only aggravate depression and worsen it. Find time and ask why you're feeling the way you are. Be honest about how you're feeling. A problem can be fixed only after it has been recognised. Family counselling: This is imperative, as a patient's medicines need monitoring by family. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Some foods can change your moods. The additional risk is much higher than previously thought, and could lead to a tightening of guidelines for prescribing oral contraceptives. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;At present, women can be given an oestrogen-based contraceptive even if they have a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 - the point at which they are classified as obese - and 35. But the findings of the European Active Surveillance (EURAS) Study, which looked at women from seven countries including Britain, suggest the risk of developing blood clots increase dramatically for such women. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;The increased risk in obese women comes from the extra oestrogen they naturally have. Those not on the pill also run a risk of blood clots, although earlier studies had lower estimates than the EURAS research. Between one and two women in 100 who develop the condition, die when a clot moves from a leg to the lungs and blocks the air supply. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;Current guidelines from the Faculty of Family Planning warn against prescribing the combined Pill to women with a BMI over 35. Dr Anne Szarewski, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, in which the results are reported, said that it was likely that guidelines would be tightened. "This study is important because it shows the absolute risk of VTE for women who are obese and taking the combined Pill is high. &lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;We have known that obesity is a risk factor but it was previously assumed the absolute risk was quite low compared with women not taking the Pill, but these findings show it's five times higher," ‘Daily Mail’ quoted her, as saying.
